Muira puama and catuaba are two of the most confidently marketed botanicals in the male-vitality aisle and two of the least studied in humans. They appear together on labels so often that most buyers assume they are a well-established pairing with a shared research base. They are not. What they share is a tradition, an Amazonian origin, and a literature that stops almost entirely at test tubes and animals.

This guide sets out what each plant actually is, what has genuinely been measured, and the identity problem that makes catuaba in particular hard to buy with confidence.

What is muira puama?

Muira puama is the bark and root of Ptychopetalum olacoides, a small Amazonian tree whose Portuguese common name translates roughly as “potency wood”. It has a long record of traditional use in Brazilian folk medicine as a nerve tonic and a sexual stimulant.

Its chemistry has been characterised properly at least once. the qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical constituents of Ptychopetalum olacoides isolated fourteen known compounds from the plant and reported that the alkaloids magnoflorine and menisperine were the dominant constituents of the bark, together accounting for about 76 per cent of the analytes measured, while phenolic content was low at no more than 1.04 mg per gram. The authors framed this as a quality-control finding: if alkaloids are the dominant substances, they are what a manufacturer should be standardising to. Almost no commercial product does.

What is catuaba, and which plant is in the bottle?

Catuaba is where this gets genuinely difficult. The name is applied in Brazil to several botanically unrelated plants, and the one most often studied in the laboratory is Trichilia catigua. A 2024 review in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology put the problem on the record: the review of traditional Brazilian plants used for male sexual dysfunction compiled seventy-four species from forty-four families used in Brazil for sexual dysfunction, found that fourteen of them — Trichilia catigua among them — had been pharmacologically studied, and stated explicitly that several different species popularly known as catuaba were identified, leading to adulterations and controversial effects.

That is not a minor labelling quibble. It means a bottle listing “catuaba bark” may or may not contain the species that the small body of research concerns, and the label alone cannot tell you which.

What has actually been measured in catuaba

The published work on Trichilia catigua is real, careful and preclinical. a study of the antioxidant, anticholinesterase and antifatigue effects of Trichilia catigua reported antioxidant, anticholinesterase and antifatigue effects, and an in vitro study of a Trichilia catigua bark aqueous extract on central nervous system targets examined a bark aqueous extract against central nervous system targets in the laboratory. Both are mechanistic studies rather than tests of sexual function, and neither involved men.

The Brazilian ethnopharmacology review suggested the plausible mechanisms across this whole plant group: antioxidant and androgenic activity, inhibition of the PDE5 enzyme, increased nitric oxide, and activation of dopaminergic and noradrenergic pathways. Those are hypotheses drawn from preclinical models — the same pathways that the blood-flow ingredients work through — not demonstrated effects in humans.

Is there any human evidence for either plant?

There is no published randomised controlled trial of muira puama or catuaba as a single ingredient for erectile function or libido in men. That sentence is the most important one on this page, and no honest version of this article can avoid it.

Why they appear on labels anyway

Three reasons, and none of them is evidence. They are inexpensive. Their traditional names carry unmistakable positioning — “potency wood” does marketing work that a mineral cannot. And in a proprietary blend, an ingredient that is present at a token amount still earns a line on the panel. Traditional use is a reason to investigate, not a result. Long folk use tells you a plant was available, tolerated and valued. It does not tell you the plant works, at what dose, or for whom. A forensic-toxicology review of herbal sexual enhancers reviewed the psychiatric and neurological adverse effects of fifteen herbal sexual enhancers, with Ptychopetalum olacoides among them. Its conclusion was that most appeared safe at therapeutic doses, with mild to severe effects occurring mainly through overdosing or self-medication with unstandardised products, and that drug interactions were the more concerning issue because these plants are typically taken alongside other extracts or medicines. The review also noted that data on several of the plants covered were sparse.

For catuaba the species ambiguity compounds this: a safety record established for Trichilia catigua does not automatically transfer to a different plant sold under the same common name.

How to judge a product containing muira puama or catuaba

Look for a binomial name. Ptychopetalum olacoides and Trichilia catigua are specific; “catuaba bark” alone is not, given how many plants share that name.

Do not pay a premium for either ingredient. Neither has human efficacy data that justifies a price step. If a formula costs more because it contains them, you are paying for the story.

Check what else is in the blend. If the formula also contains ingredients with real randomised evidence — maca root, ashwagandha and L-arginine, panax ginseng or tongkat ali — those are the components doing whatever work is being done.

Apply the same scepticism you would elsewhere on the shelf. The pattern of confident claims sitting on preclinical data is the same one documented for fadogia agrestis and for tribulus terrestris.
