Does lifting weights raise testosterone?
It raises it sharply for about half an hour after a hard session, and that acute spike is real, well documented and largely irrelevant to how you feel. What training reliably changes is body composition, insulin sensitivity, vascular function and sleep - and those are the routes by which exercise genuinely improves libido and erectile function, with meta-analytic evidence behind them.

“Lift heavy, boost testosterone” is one of the most durable pieces of gym folklore in existence, and it is built on a real observation. Draw blood immediately after a hard set of squats and testosterone genuinely is higher than it was an hour before. The acute testosterone spike is real and largely beside the point
Heavy, multi-joint resistance work with short rest periods and substantial muscle mass involvement produces a transient rise in circulating testosterone and growth hormone. Classic work on acute and chronic hormonal responses to resistance training designed to promote muscle hypertrophy mapped this in detail decades ago. The rise typically lasts on the order of fifteen to thirty minutes before returning to baseline.
Two things follow. First, a spike measured in minutes cannot be what makes you feel more capable weeks into a training block. Second, and more surprisingly, the size of the acute spike has turned out to be a poor predictor of how much muscle a man gains. Chasing the hormone response by manipulating rest periods and exercise order is optimising a number that does not deliver the outcome people think it does.
Does training change resting testosterone?
In already-healthy men, generally not by much. A controlled study of the effects of resistance training on testosterone metabolism in younger and older men examined this directly and found that the training-induced hormonal response does not translate into large shifts in resting concentrations. Other work has found that the acute response is even blunted as a lifter becomes better trained.
The important exception is men who start overweight or sedentary. There, exercise moves testosterone — but mainly by moving body fat. The genuinely strong finding: exercise improves erectile function

Nothing here is exotic, and that is the point. Two to three resistance sessions a week covering the major movement patterns — a squat or leg press, a hinge, a horizontal push and pull, a vertical push and pull — taken close enough to failure to be genuinely hard, is enough to build and hold muscle in a man over forty.
